Comparison of platforms for corporate communication and collaboration.

The main trends in doing business in the world over the past few years are:

  • Increased focus on digitalization, data protection and cybersecurity.
  • Growth of software offerings for business in the form of Platform-as-a-Service (most of the needs of a modern company can be covered by the so-called Unified-Communications-as-a-Service or Communication-Platform-as-a-Service, since communication is a critical point in any modern business). Such offers usually include a set of the most necessary tools for organizing the work of the company (communication, data storage, transfer, protection, etc.).
  • A sharp increase in the number of remote employees and a tendency to work from home office.

The business software market provides a truly myriad of options, but many of the products are centered around one core function (for example, communication only), overlooking functions that are equally important to customers (e.g., secure file storage).

Our corporate platform for secure communication and collaboration SWISS SECURIUM® includes a messenger with video calls, a secure cloud for storing and sharing files, an email service with shared calendars for team use and task management, a conferencing module, a password manager, in addition we offer remote desktop infrastructure. And all this is hosted exclusively in Switzerland, protected by multilayer encryption and two-factor authentication.

However, when choosing software for your company, you would like to have a choice to understand the real competitive advantages of each offer and select the worthiest candidate as your partner.

Below we present you with a detailed comparison of our SWISS SECURIUM® platform with competitors having similar features and hosting in Switzerland or the European Union. Only business subscriptions were involved in the comparison (as the free versions often lack many important features). We collected information about competitors from open sources and thoroughly checked it, however, we cannot guarantee 100% accuracy in our comparison. If you find a mistake or imprecise information, please contact us by email contact@alpeinsoft.ch so that we can correct it in the publication.

We chose the following platforms as competitors for comparison: Adeya, Stackfield, Tauria, Wimi Armored, Slack. There are both young and mature projects among them.

First, let's consider their hosting options:

As we can see, Slack is offered exclusively as a cloud platform. All platforms have mobile apps, however, not all of them have desktop or web versions of the apps.

Next, we'll take a look at the various features to ensure data security. All platforms use encryption, which is the current industry must-have. As a consumer, you have a right to count on this. Encryption is no longer served as a separate bonus. However, there are many additional features to help you better protect the corporate data.

A password manager is integrated into the SWISS SECURIUM® platform and is included in its price. Slack is famous for its huge number of third-party integrations, including a password manager, however, its cost isn’t included in the price of Slack.

Platforms that offer access to the web versions of their applications also help to protect access to them using various two-factor authentication options.

For those who want maximum protection of access to the platform instance, there are the VPN access or IP access restriction features. But you should distinguish that IP restrictions don’t add additional encryption layer as the VPN access does.

Of course, communication is critically important to your business. Below we compare the functions of the messengers of each platform. All of them have standard features, but some platforms may offer built-in calls to the landline phones. The SWISS SECURIUM® messenger allows you to verify the interlocutor using a secret question or comparison of special “fingerprints” of devices.

No modern business can be run efficiently without conference calls. Slack has a rather weak built-in conference tool, but its extensive integration capabilities allow you to connect various conference solutions (however, as you already understood, this may require additional registration of a paid subscription to the integrated service).

The maximum number of conference users also varies. A 10-participant conference may be enough to discuss current work tasks, but sometimes conferencing is used to broadcast training seminars or reports, then the large capacity of the conference tool is a significant advantage.

Data storage is in the second place after communication for companies. It is crucial that all corporate files are stored centrally (which, of course, doesn’t cancel backups), and that each employee has access to only those files that they need to get the job done. While all platforms allow file sharing and editing by different users, not each platform can provide live document co-editing. To work with files in Slack, you need an integration with a file storage service, duh.

Many communication software vendors claim that email is dead. Yes and no. Without a doubt, the messenger is much more convenient to communicate, but still, most companies haven’t completely abandoned e-mail and its features. For example, very useful features are shared calendars for scheduling teamwork, as well as task management. Some platforms that have moved away from email altogether are adding calendar or task functionality separately.

For truly secure communication, we, as security experts, recommend end-to-end encrypted chats or calls. But email can still be used for less sensitive information exchange.

Below is a table with various functions that are interesting and useful for different clients. It’s hard to disagree that inviting an external user with guest rights is sometimes simply necessary (for safe discussion of important decisions or to give an external user temporary access to internal company files).

For companies which use AD / LDAP, ability of a new platform to be integrated into the existing infrastructure without problems may be a serious benefit.

Different companies have different needs, each vendor tries to develop useful features for their customers, like a multi-account or a kanban board.
